Eriobotrya japonica, commonly known as medlar (not to be confused with the species Mespilus germanica, which shares this name), is a species of tree, of the subfamily Maloideae, of the Rosaceae family, belonging to the physiognomic type of microphanerophytes. To distinguish it from its European counterpart, it is also commonly called Japanese medlar, although it is native to southeastern China.
