The stone pine (Pinus pinea) is a species of pine tree native to the Old World, more specifically the Mediterranean region. Since prehistoric times, this tree has been used as a food source due to the pine nuts it produces, and is a widespread species.
The stone pine can exceed 30 metres in height, although it is usually smaller - between 12 and 20 metres. It has a very characteristic umbrella shape, with a short, wide trunk culminating in a very flat crown.
